In the wake of the George Floyd protests of 2020, how do we create the necessary conditions that foster collectivity and liberation leading to increased public safety and well-being?

šŸ“š Episode Overview
In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests of 2020, the rallying cry to 'defund the police' echoed across the nation. Fast forward to almost three years later, and the landscape of police reform has evolved in ways many didn't anticipate. This episode delves into the changes ā€” and lack thereof ā€” in policing, law enforcement, and the politics around police reform. How are emergent strategies a whole new approach to abolition?

ā€œChange happens by acting as though the future that you are dreaming of is present now. And then practicing that with people who share your vision and values and then bringing more and more people into the conversation.ā€ - Andrea J. Ritchie

šŸ” Emergent Strategies:
In this episode, we explore emergent strategies for abolition. These transformative approaches, sparked by adrienne maree brown's 2017 book "Emergent Strategies", go beyond the realm of policing. Emergent strategies, like post-industrial economics, look different, feel different, and call on different sorts of attention. Andrea J. Ritchie's forthcoming book, Practicing New Worlds, Abolition and Emergent Strategies comes out at the end of October from AK Press, as part of their Emergent Strategies Series. Drawing on decades of experience as a litigator, researcher and organizer, Ritchie offers fresh perspectives for a safer and more just world.

šŸ“œ Key Points:
The lasting impact of the George Floyd protests on the movement for abolition and the perception and operations of police departments.
The evolution of police reform, transitioning from mass action and legislation to more subtle, yet powerful emergent strategies.
Insights from Ritchie's new book ā€œPracticing New Worlds: Abolition and Emergent Strategiesā€.
