This is the classic opinion on ayah 4:34 with zero sugar coating given from a scholar of Islam. Interestingly, this is probably the only time I am aware of a Muslim scholar appearing on TV in a western country and answering this question. This Q and A session was during Habib Umar’s first visit to Australia. The Live Q&A session was open to the public and for Australians to watch.

Note: This has nothing to do with the respected scholar giving the fatwa as it is the common narrative given throughout history by the majority of our scholars. He is simply the one conveying the opinion to both Muslims and Non-Muslims.
