Do you ever wonder what happens to recyclables after you throw them in the bin? Recyclable materials that come to the Boulder County Recycling Center are sorted, baled and shipped off to be made into all kinds of cool new products.Glass is recycled locally throughout Colorado. We have a unique relationship with the Coors facility and some of our glass goes down to Coors to be made into beer bottles. Glass is recyclable indefinitely so it is a really great thing to keep in the recycling stream.Aluminum and steel cans are also recyclable indefinitely. Steel and aluminum cans are sent to Denver where they are melted down and made into new products.Milk, juice and aseptic containers are all bought back by their manufacturer for recycling. This is an example of extended producer responsibility where a manufacturer of a product becomes responsible for its end of life. These materials are recycled for their paper and aluminum content.Paper is sent throughout the northwest United States to be recycled. Paper can be recycled about seven times starting as cardboard and ending up as toilet paper.Plastics number 1 and 2 are often recycled locally in the United States. These can be recycled into plastic bags, plastic bottles, carpet and fabric.Plastics number 3-7 are sent throughout the world for recycling. These plastics can be recycled into things like lawn chairs, children’s toys and other durable plastics. If you have any questions on the recycling guidelines visit www.bouldercountyrecycles.org.Remember Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost.
