The star turn at the Conservative conference today was the Home Secretary, Priti Patel.

She began her speech by praising police officers and the other emergency services.

After that though she talked about what she called the unconscionable crimes of Wayne Couzens, the officer who kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard. They had no place in society, she said.

She confirmed there'd be an independent inquiry. The first part will examine Couzens himself - his previous behaviour and opportunities missed.

The second would look more generally at vetting practices, discipline and workplace behaviour.
