This is the new BMW X5 45e plug-in hybrid that replaces the old 40e. A new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder and BMW's latest generation batteries combine for an output of 389bhp and 442lb torque. 0-62mph takes just 5.6 seconds in a luxury SUV that offers 42 - 54 miles WLTP all-electric range.

This X5 plug-in is capable of running on electric up to speed of 84mph, delivering a tranquil cosseting ride. The spacious cabin seats five and the split-folding tailgate reveals 500-litres of boot space.

The 45e's centre console is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It runs the 7th generation of BMW's excellent iDrive system.

The 2020 BMW X5 xDrive 45e costs from just over £63,000.
