Lisa is a young woman who works in a greeting card shop in Vienna, selling tokens of affection for others to give. With her passion and enthusiasm for her work, Lisa is a believer in true love and the dreams of all-consuming romance.

But Lisa's own life doesn't quite live up to the fantasies she sells. She lives at home with her dissolute father -- and is still in love with her photographer ex-boyfriend Alf, long after their relationship ended.

But when Alf comes back into town to shoot a campaign for a treatment for varicose veins, she signs her dad up and finds a way back into Alf's circle, hoping to confess her undying love and win her lover's heart back.

Director Christoph Rainer adroitly blends a charming sense of European whimsy -- think arthouse classic "Amelie" with its stylish, romantic-bohemian visuals and touches of cheeky wit -- with an unflinching examination of the beauty and pain of living with intense emotions.

The film's secret weapon is lead actress Vicky Krieps, now earning acclaim in Paul Thomas Anderson's feature "Phantom Thread," with Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis. She gives an extraordinarily vulnerable, affecting performance, right down to the film's final transcendent moment.

With its superlative acting, visual sophistication and honest, witty writing, PITTER PATTER GOES MY HEART lays bare the raw, uncomfortable emotions underneath the romantic fantasies we imbue love with — and should be deeply resonant to anyone who's ever loved truly, madly or deeply.
