Some 200 drivers and travellers stranded in a snow-hit highway in southeastern province of Diyarbakir were rescued early on Monday, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Presidency (AFAD) said in a statement.

The statement said crews evacuated passengers stranded in 47 vehicles and two buses stuck on highway due to a blizzard, following a 12-hour long operation.

Heavy snowfall disrupted road traffic in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey, shutting down highways and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on highways.

Heavy snow also hit Istanbul, Europe’s largest city, with flights grounded at Istanbul Airport for one hour on Monday
