Knott's Scary Farm, also known as Knott's Halloween Haunt, is a seasonal Halloween extravaganza at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. This event completely transforms the theme park into a sprawling "160 acres of terror" through roaming monsters, spine-chilling mazes, and eerie 'scare zones.' As of 2010, it was the first, largest, and longest-running Halloween event hosted by a theme park. What started as a modest three-night affair from October 26 to 28, 1973, has now evolved into an annual six-week-long spectacle that will mark its 50th year in 2023, firmly establishing itself as the most significant event in any theme park.

The concept for this immersive Halloween experience originated in a September 1973 meeting with George Condos and Martha Boyd from the marketing department, along with Bill Hollingshead and Gary Salisbury from the entertainment office, presenting the idea to the park's operations committee. Bud Hurlbut, who managed attractions like the Mine Ride and Log Ride, felt that static props weren't enough to create the desired scare factor. So, he took matters into his own hands, donning a gorilla suit and startling guests as they rode the Mine Ride. The immediate success of this "Halloween Haunt" was palpable, with nightly sell-out crowds the following year.
