This is the story of The Great Escape in 1944 of 76 men from Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Sagan on the borders of Poland. 3 got home, 73 were captured, 50 of whom were secretly shot on the instructions of Hitler against every rule of War. The cold-blooded murder of these 50 unarmed Allied airmen was the worst atrocity against Western allied soldiers during the entire war. Immediately after the war the Allies sought justice for crimes committed against them. The RAF investigation tracked down the perpetrators and executioners who were brought to justice in a fifty day trial in Hamburg 1947. This film tells the story as never told before. The sheer ambition and adventure of the break out masks its tragic and sinister end. The film combines documentary interviews with veterans of the escape camp and relatives of the dead plus dramatised sections that bring vividly to life some of the stories and give emotional weight to the characters in particular those who were killed.
