We’ve got a new player in the full-size SUV game. Or rather two with the all-new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

Both vehicles are three-row, seven- or eight-passenger SUVs with ladder frames and independent rear suspension.

On the 2022 Wagoneer, power comes from one engine, that’s Chrysler’s 5.7-liter e-Torque V8. That’s a 48-volt mild-hybrid powerplant that puts up good numbers (392 hp, 404 lb-ft torque). The gas engine combined with that electric motor helps the Wagoneer tow up to 10,000 pounds. That’s possible because the tow hitch is integrated into the frame.

The 8-speed automatic transmission is a tried and tested one and works well here moving the weight of the Wagoneer very effectively. It finds gears well and makes acceleration easy.

When it comes to driving the Wagoneer the first thing I notice is the ride quality. Just when you think it’s going to be too floaty the suspension stiffens up. It’s quite nice.

When it comes to the steering, I’m actually pretty impressed. On roads where you’re not driving too fast the steering is pretty precise. At highway speeds, the weight increased and while other people might not like it. I’m good with it.

When it comes to driver’s safety features it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The adaptive cruise control is great. Follows closely and starts up again quickly. But the lane-keeping assist isn’t refined or smooth.

The interior feels very lux, even though this isn’t the Grand one. You get either a 10.1-inch or 12.3-inch infotainment screen that integrates the 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. All of this is customizable. There is plenty to be impressed about in here.

Among the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer's primary competitors are the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon Denali, and Lincoln Navigator.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, a rear-wheel-drive Series I model, starts at $57,995. That is pricey but you do get a lot of great standard features including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As well as a wireless smartphone charging pad and a WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices.

There’s also an available passenger touchscreen that lets your front passenger control the navigation and music as well as watch their own media from their phone here.

When you move up to the better-equipped Series II Jeep Wagoneer, the price climbs to about $68,000.

The top Wagoneer, the Series III model equipped to the gills with air suspension and a super-luxe interior with a head-up display, starts at $72,994 (2WD) and $75,995 (4WD).

The advanced all-terrain package ($2,295 on Series II, $1,095 on Series III) gets extra skid plates for added underbody protection. And the convenience package adds the Quadra-Lift air suspension that rides very comfortably and gets you up to 10-inches of ground clearance with five inches of variable travel depending on what you need to do.

Those models get Selec-Terrain traction management with drive modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud settings. And there’s a function that allows smooth turning when you’re in 4 low, which works really well.

In all, there are three off-road systems to choose from. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II adds a 2-range transfer case with low-range gearing. Quadra-Drive II also has a 2-range transfer case with low gearing, but it comes with an electronic limited-slip rear differential.

With rugged body-on-frame construction and even the Wagoneer’s power can get you over some fun stuff. independent rear suspension, and a limited-slip differential and hill-descent control, dang, this thing can eat up its share of dirt as well.

The one engine option in the Grand Wagoneer is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that benefits from a new air induction system (471 hp, 455 lb-ft torque). That’s robust, and the iron-block powerplant sends power to all four wheels via a proven 8-speed automatic transmission.

All Grand Wagoneers come standard with Quadra-Drive II with all those drive modes like Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock. We’ve heard there might be a 4x2 RWD version, but not for now.

Pricing on the Grand Wagoneer starts at $86,995. The top Series III ($103,995) jumps into Mercedes-Benz GLS territory, folks.

With the crazy tech, gorgeous interior styling, and that Jeep heritage, the Wagoneer is impressive.
