The 2017 Volvo S90 looks to take Sweden to the next level in luxury, going head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class – all favourites in the flash, luxury saloon segment. It’s got tons of fancy gadgets up its sleeve but the S90 is also quite practical, with plenty of rear passenger space and 500 litres of boot space.

We test the 2.0-litre 187bhp D4 diesel mated to an eight-spee d automatic transmission with the R-Design trim to see whether it has got what it takes to tackle the German big guns.

But can the Swedish really measure up to the Germans?
