Last weekend during the race at Watkins Glen International, fans witnessed possibly the biggest gaffe in the 2023 season. Fans noticed a car stalled out at the bus stop. That driver was Chase Elliott, the 2020 champion who needed to score the victory in order to make it into the NASCAR Playoffs. People were immediately shock by the #9 Machine losing power down the back straightaway, but what was said on the radio is what dumbfounded everyone…
It was reported that Alan Gustafson made the error of determining how many laps a reserved tank could hold fuel for the car. According to Steve Latarte, the most fuel that can be saved in the reserved tank could be roughly one lap at a course that size, Gustafson thought it was 3. Nearly 5 miles off from the marker. This would end the chances of Chase Elliott to win the race at the Glen, potentially his best shot at making it into the playoffs. You can probably guess how the Elliott Fans responded to this egregious mistake. Many called for the termination of Alan Gustafson and stated that he had wasted so many drivers' years with him up in their pit box. But is this statement true… Well, let's take a closer look.
