Japan’s military history stretches back over 3,000 years, as far back as 1000 BCE. Today, however, their forces look very different from the prehistoric battlers of the Jōmon period or the samurai of feudal Japan. Modern Japanese military forces fall under the umbrella of the Japan Self-Defense Forces established after World War II.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force is made up of approximately 50,000 personnel and has about 740 operational aircraft. Of those, 330 are fighter aircraft designed for combat.
