This is the first video I ever made with a bona fide bibliography. If you want to read more about the Alien series, I’d recommend the Alien Resurrection novelization by AC Crispin, and “Beautiful Monsters” by David McIntee—who really isn’t as bad a scholar as this video might make him sound. McIntee is a trivia-hound—just like me—and his production-narratives for all four films make for some really interesting reads.

There’s also Roz Kaveney’s anthology of essays, “From Alien to The Matrix,” which presents some really interesting interpretations of the Alien series, even if I don’t agree with every one of them. In fact, the first several drafts of this video wound up referencing a lot more of her writing—back when the video was going to open with like a ten-minute analysis of the series as a whole. If you ever happen to see Kaveney, please don’t show her this video—I want her to like me.

I’d also recommend “Framing Monsters: Fantasy Film and Social Alienation” by Joshua David Bellin, who pushes the Aliens-as-Reagan-era-propaganda theory even harder than Amy Taubin. See... whether you agree with that interpretation or not, it certainly makes for an interesting read.

And, finally, special thanks goes out to tumblr user nancykerrigan, who sent me a really cool essay by Elizabeth Hills called “From ‘figurative males’ to action heroines: further thoughts on active women in the cinema,” which, like so much else in this video, wound up getting cut, either because it ran too long or it didn’t tie directly into Alien Resurrection.
