NYU Marketing Professor and serial entrepreneur Scott Galloway explains the artificial intelligence technology behind chatbots like ChatGPT. Using clear language and supporting animations Prof Galloway defines and illustrates the two key technologies that are at the core of how AI works: vector embedding and neural networks. Scott explains that vectors are made up of hundreds of dimensions, each representing how the word is used in language and capturing an aspect of the word’s meaning. Galloway describes Neural Networks as being modeled on the brain’s complex structure and consisting of billions of bits of computer memory, called “parameters” or “weights,” that are programmed to perform simple calculations. These two technologies combine to form the large language model, or LLM. Prof Galloway explains the role of the chatbots as the interface between the user and the LLM. Chatbot systems query the neural network directly and generate logical responses based on the knowledge gained by crawling much of the internet or any discrete set of information.
