23 February 2024. On today's walk I encountered 3 outdoor parking facilities. Since the severe Earthquakes of 2011, many parcels of land remain vacant, their original buildings long demolished and yet nothing rebuilt in their place.

Partly because Wellington, the political capitol 500 miles away, imposed a "blueprint" upon Christchurch in 2012, including laws preventing owners of small parcels of land in the Central Business District part of the city, from using their insurance payouts from rebuilding their own shops and offices. There were effectively forced to sell their small freehold land holding (anything under 7,500 m2 , approx 2 acres) to one of several large property developers, mostly owned by a handful of existing "old money families" rich-listers, or overseas corporations.

Since 2011, Many empty plots of land have been permitted to be used "temporarily" as car parking. Nowadays they must cover the parking area with gravel/shingle, stones sufficient to keep it from becoming a dust-bowl in Summer or a mud-pit in Winter. (Previously they were let away without such ground covering).

In these 3 videos (1193, 1194 and 1195), I show examples of both good and bad "Landscaping" apparently the minimum required to comply with City Council permit and use consenting laws.
