Is it me or is the me or is the Hanauma Bay coral reef dying or almost dead? It was sad to see. This was my first time snorkeling Hanauma Bay so it was quite a shock to see how damaged this beautiful place is from overuse (tourism). In my opinion, this place needs to close for a long time to let the reef recover. It is, after all, considered a nature preserve. The Haunama Bay beach is beautiful. The scenery is amazing sitting there in the middle of that old volcanic crater.

As soon as you start snorkeling and stick your head under the water, it's an entirely different scene. Every other Hawaii reef I have snorkeled has been beautiful and colorful. Not Hanauma Bay. Sure there are still many beautiful fish swimming around such as the lagoon trigger (picasso) fish, convict fish, box fish, parrot fish (my favorite) and more. I didn't see any eels or sea turtles. The coral reef has been badly damaged by over use. As you can see in this video, the reef looks like a baron wasteland. There was not much coral to see and the coral I saw was in bad shape. I only saw one sea urchin. Only one! It was huge, but usually they are everywhere. After all, my most viewed YouTube video (with over 100 million views) was of me trying to remove spines from my foot. The sea urchin sting was so painful I could barely swim or walk immediately afterwards. This happened on Maui back in 2003 when a wave pushed me into the reef.

I filmed this current video on November 16, 2019 with a GoPro Hero7 Black hyper smooth stabilization HD 4K waterproof camera. Thanks for getting some footage of me Steff!

Location is Hanauma Bay Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, Pacific Ocean. This is a short and scenic 30 minute drive from Waikiki Honolulu off of highway 72. It costs one dollar for parking and $7.50 per person to enter the beach. Also, it is mandatory that every tourist watches a conservation video before entering the beach. That is the ironic part, because the conservation has utterly failed. Best snorkeling in Hawaii? Maybe it used to be..

I hope you enjoy my snorkeling in Hawaii travel vlog video.
