An attempt to capture the essence of driving an extreme off-road trail with a stock-standard 1984 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 416 Doka.
This epic day trip was organised by Stephan Spaans, and it was a pleasure and a priviledge to get out in the bush together with a group of seasoned off-road drivers and have some unadultered fun.
This video attempts to show many of the qualities of the Unimog as the most capable off-road vehicle in the world. This includes: unmatched articulation due to the flexible chassis, complete traction and control down a 45° rock incline (where other vehicles skid and lose traction), massive ground clearance because of portal axles, and of course the air-activated front- and rear differential locks.
If you're wondering: Because of the larger-than-normal tyres, I had to temporarily remove my front wheel mud-guards to accommodate the extreme articulation.
This video also features a rare occasion: I needed the help of a Jeep to keep me upright with his winch while I extracted myself out of a tricky situation (40° side incline, with my front wheel wedged UNDER - not over! - a rock ledge).
