Hey guys, Modelling Weekly here! In today's video, I'll be providing the basic information about using oil paints on your models, along with 4 nice techniques that will make your builds pop! I hope you find it helpful!

OIL PAINTS FAQ:

Q: Are oil paints toxic?
A: No, unless you have an allergy to linseed oil. You have to be careful with the thinner though, as some can be harmful to your health (e.g. White Spirit).

Q: Do I need a varnish layer before using oil paints?
A: Sometimes, though I would apply a varnish all the time just to be safe. Some paints require it (such as acrylics), though hybrids such as Tamiya do not necessarily, though it's good to be safe.

Q: What can I use to clean or thin oil paints?
A: Products such as white spirit, or designated oil thinners for artists or modelers are good things to go to.

Q: How long do oils take to dry properly?
A: Between 24 to 48 hours, though most of the time it's fine to leave oil weathering to dry for around 2 to 3 hours before applying a varnish over the top.

Q: Is it OK to apply oil paints with synthetic hair brushes?
A: Yes! Brushes that use natural hairs (such as Sable) generally blend the oil paint nicer, though if you want to go cheaper then synthetic hairs are perfectly fine and usable.

Q: Do I need to remove excess oil from my oil paints before using them?
A: Again, it's not necessary, though highly recommended. Draining a lot of the oil from the paints before using them makes them easier to blend, and also decreases their drying time.

Q: Should I apply a sealing varnish layer over the top of my oil weathering?
A: Only if you wish to apply more enamel/oil effects on top of the weathering, without disturbing your previous work. Otherwise, oil paints will dry to a tough and dry finish after you leave them for 24 to 48 hours! NOTE: Some acrylic varnishes don't stick very well to oil paints. Xf-86 and other Tamiya Hybrid varnishes work for me though, so you could try them.
