Soft tissue sarcoma is a cancer that affects the body's soft tissues. It's a complex condition with various types, each requiring a specific approach to treatment. Dr Gupta Nishith Pravenchandra, Consultant, Musculoskeletal Oncology at Narayana Hospital, Howrah, shares insights on how to treat this disease.
Dr Gupta outlines that the primary treatment for most sarcomas is surgery, aiming to remove the tumour completely. This approach is central to managing the condition, whether the sarcoma requires chemotherapy. If surgery isn't possible, other treatments like radiation or chemotherapy might be used.
The treatment plan depends on the sarcoma's size, type, and location. Radiation therapy could be recommended before or after surgery to shrink the tumour or kill any remaining cancer cells. Chemotherapy might be used, especially if the sarcoma has spread to places like the lungs.
Surgical options vary based on the tumour's involvement with vital body parts. If the tumour can be removed without affecting major blood vessels, surgery is straightforward. In more complex cases, where the tumour is too large or surgery could impair the limb's function, amputation may be considered.
Dr Gupta emphasises that understanding the specific characteristics of the sarcoma is crucial for determining the best treatment approach. This video aims to provide clear information on managing soft tissue sarcoma, highlighting the importance of personalised care.
