The Jetta offered both practicality and driving enjoyment for many years, but when Volkswagen attempted to broaden its appeal for 2011, the car got weaker in both respects. Redesigned for 2019, the new Jetta wants to live up to its historical legacy. Our reviewer finds the car improved in both function and fun, despite having a slightly less powerful engine. Better yet, the new car starts at $100 less than last year’s version.

The new Jetta’s engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that makes 3 fewer horsepower than the previous one, but our reviewer calls it more responsive. It’s still available with an automatic or a manual transmission, each of which offers more gears this year than last.
