Aortic valve replacement is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased aortic valve with a prosthetic valve, restoring normal blood flow from the heart to the body. Dr Suraj Narasimhan A, Consultant Cardiology, Adult of Narayana Health City, Bommasandra Bengaluru, discusses the surgical and transcatheter methods of replacing the aortic valve.
Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery
● This procedure involves opening the chest, removing the old valve, and suturing in a new one under general anaesthesia.
● A bypass heart-lung machine supports circulation during surgery.
● Patients typically experience a longer hospital stay and recovery period.
Aortic Valve Implantation by Transcatheter (TAVI)
● TAVI is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthesia.
● It entails inserting a catheter through a leg artery to implant a new valve.
● Patients undergoing TAVI often have a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery compared to surgical methods.
Dr Narasimhan emphasises TAVI as a simpler, less burdensome option for aortic valve replacement, offering expedited recovery and reduced hospitalisation.
