The original Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, was one of the first sci-fi stories to be centered around the fall of a galactic empire. Asimov got the idea after reading “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”, an 18th century historical series, by Edward Gibbons. He published his first Foundation story in Astounding magazine in the 1940s, now in 2021 Apple TV+ is releasing a series based on this classic sci-fi masterpiece.

Foundation is set more than 21 thousand years in the future, it has amazing scope with the Empire being made up of more than 25 million worlds. The colonization of the Milky Way was made possible by hyper-spatial travel. The Foundation this series influenced all of the most popular sci-fi you’re familiar with, including Dune and Star Wars. It won a special Hugo Award for the greatest series of all time, beating out J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings.

Asimov’s Empire is more than 12,000 years old when Hari Seldon predicts it will fall using Psychohistory. There are more than 40 billion people living on the capital city/planet of Trantor. There are no robots or advanced alien civilizations in the gal

I would recommend reading the series in order of publication as they’re listed here. I would advise against reading the prequels first.

This Foundation Galactic Empire video explains everything about Asimov’s creation. It gives a background for the Foundation series without spoilers for how things end. As a fan I’m hoping that the TV series will be able to develop an engaging show that can tell the complete 1000 year story of Hari Seldon’s Psychohistory, and the two Foundations he created to help the Galaxy avoid a 30,000 year period of decline.
