The BMW M550i is a lot like the old E39 M5. It’s supple, rides well, is extremely refined – and it packs serious heat from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. These days, the full-fat BMW M5 is a much harder-edged beast than it ever was before. Don’t get us wrong: the M5 is a phenomenal beast. But if you want your V8-powered BMW 5 Series with the kind of rounded liveability an M5 once had, you’ll want the M550i.
But should you buy the 2021 M550i instead of an Audi S6 or Mercedes-AMG E53?
