French police evicted hundreds of migrants from an abandoned building in a Paris suburb early Wednesday, in a move criticised by migrant aid groups as the latest example of “social cleansing” ahead of the Olympics.

Described as the largest migrant settlement in France, 450 people, including 50 women and 20 children, had moved into the empty three-storey office building in Vitry-sur-Seine over the last three years.

After days of warnings, 250 police officers carried out the evacuation early Wednesday, breaking open doors and sending people to board waiting buses that displaced them to other parts of France, far from the capital, including Pays de la Loire, Orleans and Bordeaux.
