Is Stewart-Haas Racing better off with Ryan Preece or Cole Custer behind the wheel of the 41 Ford in 2023? It would seem that SHR has too many drivers for not enough rides and they are left with the tough decision of whether to keep Cole Custer in the 41 car or give the seat to Ryan Preece next year. Tony Stewart has endorsed Ryan Preece, and from a performance standpoint that would seem to be the better option, but co-owner Gene Haas has always seemed to have direct control over the 41 car (which is primarily sponsored by his own company) and has endorsed Cole Custer. Ultimately, Haas will likely win out, as he has in the past when there have been disputes over SHR's fourth car, but Ryan Preece's 2022 performance shows that he's ready and worthy of a ride at SHR. He ran well in Rick Ware Racing's 15 car, finished in the top 10 twice for BJ McLeod's Xfinity Series team, and had a worst finish of 11th in 10 Truck Series starts with David Gilliland Racing, highlighted with a win for the pole in Nashville.
