The Archangel Michael was the first of three individuals of whom Joan of Arc began having visions as a young teenager. A powerful Warrior Angel and leader of God's Heavenly Host, St Michael is often depicted with a fiery sword and subduing Satan beneath his feet. As God's chief soldier, he is considered to be the patron saint of the military all around the world and the protector of Holy places.
He is also often portrayed holding the Scales of Justice, and is believed to escort the souls of the deceased to their judgement.
