PART 4 of 5 // Don’t judge them (during the interview)

We aren’t excusing anything in the year of Our Lord 2024 however comma save the judgment for after the interview unless having an intervention is part of the narrative. To me, documenting someone is first and foremost about attempting to capture that person as authentically as possible.

People are not themselves if they feel like they’re being judged and ultimately, you control the narrative as the interviewer so even if they do lie (which they very well might) you have the final control of the finished project — not them.

I’ve had family members exaggerate or lie on camera, I did not excuse it nor did I allow it to go unchecked in the final project. That being said, discomfort will be your constant companion through this process. Your family has skeletons. Every family does. We’ve all fallen short of the glory.

Progress is not promised, it happens begrudgingly.

Black History Month is an opportunity for everyone in the United States to remember our shared history. Regardless of what race you are, if you’re my age (30s+) and your parent grew up in the United States — then they lived through desegregation. Ask them about their experience, and don’t judge their answer.
