Screaming Eagle was founded in 1986 when realtor Jean Phillips purchased the lands. For the first few years, she sold to various Napa wineries but in 1992, she hired Heidi Barrett as a winemaker and produced a small amount of Screaming Eagle.

Jean sold the winery to Charles Banks and Stan Kroenke in 2006. They decided to replant about 70% of the vineyard and cancelled the contracts to sell their wines so their grapes could be used for the Screaming Eagle wine. In 2009, Charles Banks sold his interest to Stan Kroenke.

The vineyard is about 57 acres in size with around 46 acres used for the production of wines. The vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Only around 22 acres is used to produce Screaming Eagle. The rest is used to produce Second Flight and a white wine that Screaming Eagle will make.

Current winemaker is Nick Gislason (formerly at Harlan). About 500-850 cases of Screaming Eagle is produced each year.

The blend of 2012 Screaming Eagle is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The blend of 2014 Screaming Eagle Second Flight is 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon.
