2022 Toyota Crown Kluger hybrid in-depth Walkaround

To differentiate from the Toyota Highlander/Kluger, the Crown Kluger gets sophisticated headlight graphics in a three-eyed look, an inverted hexagonal upper grille with the Toyota Crown badge, and a bold, trapezoidal lower grille that is similar to that of the new Toyota Camry, with chrome-embellished horizontal bars.

The Toyota Crown Kluger is available in 5- and 7-seat versions. On the outside, the first Toyota Crown SUV has features like three-eyed LED headlights, LED front fog lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, LED rear combination lamps, privacy glass (rear, rear quarter, and rear windshield), and a panoramic sunroof. Interior highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, PM2.5 air filter, tri-zone automatic climate control system, premium perforated leather + synthetic leather seat upholstery, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with face recognition and Hello Toyota voice assistant, and 11-speaker JBL Advanced Surround Sound System.

Powering the Toyota Crown Kluger is a standard 2.5-liter hybrid engine with a maximum power of 141 kW or 189 hp and a maximum torque of 238 Nm (176 Lb.-Ft.). Depending on the configuration, one or two electric motors assist the internal combustion engine. The 2WD configurations have one motor at the front, generating 134 kW (180 hp) and 270 Nm (199 Lb.-Ft.). The 4WD configurations have a second electric motor as well, spinning the rear wheels. This motor produces 40 kW (54 hp) and 121 Nm (89 Lb.-Ft.). Irrespective of the configuration, 183 kW (245 hp) is the system output. The battery pack comprises 40 battery modules consisting of 6 Ah nickel-metal hydride cells.

The previously sighted homologation documents for the Crown Kluger’s entry into the China market revealed that the three-row, Highlander-based SUV measures 5,015 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, 1,750 mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. Those also show that the SUV will wear 18-inch alloy wheels, though 20-inch items are also available.
