Dodge gave the Charger and Challenger great reboots in the 2000s, Chevy has carried the Camaro nameplate on to this day, and the Ford Mustang has been in constant production since the 1960s. These are classic muscle cars that still have a presence and everyone is familiar with. There are however some amazing examples of Detroit muscle, from the golden age that have been somewhat forgotten.

The American Motors Corporation (AMC) built some of the most distinctive muscle cars in the late 60s/early 70s, but no longer exists and has no way of continuing its legacy. Other companies like Plymouth, Pontiac, and Mercury were divisions of current automakers, but have been discontinued. Even Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford, the Big Three muscle car manufacturers, built killer rides back in the day that haven't been brought into the new age. Also, muscle cars existed before 1964, when everyone assumed they were created.

Hardcore muscle fans, nerds, and wonks will remember these powerful cars, but for most people, they've been lost to history. Of course, the easiest solution would be for the big American automakers to relaunch some of their classics, but things are kind of shifting to EVs so that's probably not going to happen. To preserve some history, here are some lesser-known classic muscle cars that everyone should be aware of.
