Grammy-nominated composer and flutist Valerie Coleman is a proud alum of both CFA and BUTI. She attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute as a teenager and went on to graduate from Boston University College of Fine Arts with a degree in flute performance and composition. Since then, she has become one of the most influential chamber musicians of her generation. Coleman (CFA’95, BUTI’89) has composed for, and performed with, some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Louisville Orchestra. Her composition Umoja, Anthem for Unity was ranked in the “Top 101 Great American Ensemble Works” by Chamber Music America.
Coleman was honored at the 2022 BU College of Fine Arts Distinguished Alumni Awards for her outstanding contributions to her field and community. Upon receiving the award, she reflected, “It's very important for students, across Boston University and also across the world, to claim their artistry and become all they're meant to be.”
