Business is changing in Homer. Brad Anderson, executive director of the Homer Chamber of Commerce, says everyone's model has adjusted. He says Alaskans have always been an important part of the economy, and that's true now more than ever. With next to zero out-of state-tourists in town, businesses are turning to Alaskans.

Jaret McDonald owns Just Add Water Adventures and normally takes small boats of tourists out for fishing and kayaking. Those plans haven’t changed, but some of the details have. His COVID-19 mitigation plan, posted on the boat, describes a lot more cleaning than usual. His trips are flexing to what Alaskans want out of fishing — food rather than trophies.

“Try and help Alaskans fill their freezers, absolutely try and make it fun and enjoy it, and try not to go out of business,” McDonald says.
