05:56 Reason 1: CULTURE. In Chinese confucian culture lying is sometimes a duty to protect the collective. In Western christian culture, lying is selfish and immoral, but lying to show overconfidence is fine.
08:54 Reason 2: HISTORY. China's trauma comes back to cultural revolution, where lying was often a matter of survival and shook the moral compass of many now older Chinese. The Western trauma goes back to colonialist idea that lying is accepted if it serves a higher moral fight.

In the Western American dream, people started lying more because they lost faith in the dream or understood that lying was the fastest track to make it to the exclusive elite.
17:04 Reason 4: SOCIETY. In China, as capitalism was accepted, and a new reality made many Chinese lie to benefit from the growth of China. This was pragmatic and opportunistic for people who had known poverty before. In the West, lying is ever more about adapting people's identity to how the world around them sees them. People in the West lie more often to be accepted on social media and because of peer pressure of connected and real friends.
