►The Crater Lake National Park is the fifth oldest National Park in the United States; it’s located in southern Oregon and was first established as such in 1902. Crater Lake itself is the deepest lake in America, reaching just shy of 2,000 feet. People say their first sight of Crater Lake is enchanting, with it’s intense blue waters surrounded by cliffs towering 2,000 feet above. Native American legend states that the mountain bluebird was grey initially before dipping into the lake.

That’s not the only Native American legend in regards to the area. The Klamath people who were indigenous to the area view Crater Lake as being sacred, they perceive the lake to be a kind of crossroad between the spirits above and the spirits below; interestingly, the spirits below they call Llao and describe a fiery and dark figure. Inside Crater Lake is Wizard’s island, which the Klamath people’s state Llao resides.

It’s not clear to me when these legends began or what caused the Klamath people to start talking about the area in this way, but it’s a fascinating piece of history nevertheless. The lore of this place didn’t end with the natives, later settlers would end up having incidents of their own to discuss.

This leads us to the earliest reported disappearance that I could find which occurred in 1853 John Wesley Hillman, Henry Klippel and Isaac Skeeters...
