MPs will vote today on plans to prevent future generations from being allowed to smoke. The legislation will raise the legal age for buying cigarettes in England by one year, each year until it applies to the whole population. Disposable vapes will also be banned outright, with reusable ones limited to four flavours.

Professor Chris Whitty says vapes 'themselves are not safe' as the majority of them have nicotine in them. He adds that 'we don't know the extent of the long-term effect of vapes.'

smoking is responsible for around 80,000 deaths annually and is the UK’s single biggest preventable killer, costing the NHS and economy an estimated £17 billion a year—far more than the £10 billion annual revenue from tobacco taxation.
