This year in English class, Cindy read a graphic novel called American-Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang which explored the idea of stereotypes and self-acceptance. As she witnessed the character battle to disassociate himself from suffocating stereotypes, Cindy recognized the same conflict within herself. In a heartfelt TED Talk, Cindy Suryadi explores the topic of diverse representation in mainstream media by looking at examples of her own challenges and gives suggestions on what we should do moving forward. Cindy Suryadi is a ninth-grade student from Indonesia and attends the Western Academy of Beijing. She is interested in issues of diversity and cultural representation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
