Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that is sometimes reported to be addictive in some patients. In this video I clarify this situation. Omeprazole is used to reduce acid production in the stomach, treating conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is effective in the prevention of stomach lesions due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibiotics. Although generally safe, long-term use may be associated with side effects such as risk of fractures, vitamin deficiencies, and increased gastrointestinal infections.
