The story of Napoleon Bonaparte. After defeating two Austrian armies, Napoleon now faces a third. Attempting to slip past the French via Bassano, this is General Wurmser's last chance to relieve the thousands of Austrians trapped in the fortress of Mantua. By now, Napoleon has reached legendary status among his troops, and is seen as a liberator to the Italians and patron to its leading lights - while also taking part in the seizure of its artwork to adorn Paris' new national art museum, the Louvre.

The time period covered in this episode is August and September 1796.
