The Sound of Music is universally regarded as one of the most popular and beloved film musicals of all time, but many don't realize that the film, as well as the stage play that it was derived from, were based on a real life family. Although the stage play and film certainly conveyed the general spirit of the family to a fairly authentic degree, and the real life story also featured a happy ending that would rival it's stage and film counterpart, some key aspects of the true story were altered by it's creators in order to more effectively appease general audiences.

Changing history to better fit into a play or film is certainly not unheard of, and most films you see that say "based on a true story" likely changed quite a bit of key information when translating said story to the screen. While it's not at all uncommon, The Sound of Music is perhaps the most famous example of changing history for film, in no small part because of the play and film's cultural ubiquity.

Given that The Sound of Music is one of the highest grossing films of all time, it has managed to surpass it's real life origins in the cultural eye in a pretty unique way. However, although some key aspects of truth were changed, both the film and play did manage to authentically portray the heart of the real life story that inspired them. Without further ado, let's take a look at the real family behind The Sound of Music!
