Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is an oft-adapted piece of writing. Originally penned by Seiko Tanabe and weighing in at only a handful of pages, its multiple iterations speak to a timeless importance. 2020s animated outing is a standout in that lineage, a beautiful picture that fully explores Tanabe's themes of a beastly society, the majesty of the ocean, and the Françoise Sagan of it all.
