When the slabs are lowered, the oncoming water flow creates a lifting force from one of the sides (when only one plate is lowered) or along the entire stern (when both plates are activated). This raises the stern completely or only on one side.

Thus, to level out the side roll, one plate must be lowered from the corresponding side. And to raise the stern and level the pitch, both plates are lowered at the same time.
