The Hyundai Tucson has been in the shadows of the more popular Honda CR-V & Toyota Rav4. But for the new generation 2022 Tucson, Hyundai is pulling out all the stops to make the crossover stand out in a very crowded compact SUV segment. The Ford Escape has also had a complete refresh (last year) and it too is available as a hybrid. So which of these compact hybrid SUVs is best and can they take on the best sellers in the class; The Honda CR-V & Toyota Rav4?

The hybrid Hyundai Tucson 2022 is powered by a 1.6L Turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the hybrid Ford Escape 2021 is powered by a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that produces 200 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the fastest compact hybrid SUV, in fact it’s one of the slowest to 100 km/h, but it can get up to highway speeds without impending anyone that may be behind you.

But what really matters with hybrid SUVs is fuel economy. The 2022 Hyundai Tucson hybrid can achieve 6.3 L/100km (37.3 MPG) in a city and 6.6 L/100km (35.6 MPG) on a highway. However, in the real world you can get better numbers than those as I did at 6.2 L/100km (38 MPG) over a total of almost 500 km (310 miles) while driving the SUV. The 2021 Ford Escape hybrid is rated for 5.5 L/100km (42.7 MPG) in a city and 6.4 L/100km (36.8 MPG) on a highway for this AWD variant. During my time with the Escape Hybrid, I averaged 4.8 L/100km (49 MPG) which is much better than the claimed fuel economy numbers.
