The Digastricus muscle is a pair of muscles located at the side of our neck. The Digastricus together with the Stylohyoideus, Mylohyoideus and Geniohyideus muscles form the Suprahyoid muscles which help create the floor of the mouth. The Digastricus muscle is made out of two bellies, the posterior and anterior bellies, which are connected by the intermediate tendon. The intermediate tendon itself attaches to the Hyoid bone within the neck. The posterior belly is the larger out of the two bellies and begins with its connection to the Temporal bone at the point known as the mastoid notch and moves its way downwards attaching to the intermediate tendon. The anterior belly starts within the front of the jaw and moves down connecting to the intermediate tendon. Thus making the muscle resemble a U shape. The Digastricus has an important role in our everyday lives as it helps to lower and raise the jaw, and together with the other Suprahyoid muscles the Digastricus helps us to talk, chew and swallow.
