Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern is an ECG abnormality characterized as a short PR-interval and wide QRS-complex with a delta wave. When this specific ECG abnormality is present with symptoms (palpitations, lightheadedness, syncope, or SVT) we call it Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. Patients with WPW are at an increased lifetime risk of SVT. The reason WPW can be dangerous is the wide QRS-complex can degenerate into VT (ventricular tachycardia) or VF (ventricular fibrillation) which, although exceedingly rare, can cause sudden cardiac death.

In this video I review medications to avoid in the acute setting, the antiarrhythmic of choice for treating SVT with aberrancy, the potentially curative ablation procedure, and how we risk stratify asymptomatic patients.
