Twelfth appointment of the conference series "Parlando di Arte Rupestre" (« talking about rock art »). Genevieve von Petzinger presents a conference named « Paleolithic Signs and the Origins of Graphic Communication »

While the invention of writing is very much rooted in the rise of hierarchical, sedentary societies around 5,000 years ago, its beginnings seem to extend much further back in time to the Paleolithic period. The geometric signs found at cave and rock art sites across Ice Age Europe provide a dataset of early visual marks that offer the opportunity to gain insight into the development of this practice. This talk will introduce the audience to these enigmatic Paleolithic images while examining their spatial-temporal use across Europe and discussing the implications of these patterns in the context of the origins of graphic communication.
