Raymond Iezzi, Jr., M.D., Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology vitreo retinal surgeon discusses a service provided to patients with the most severe forms of vision loss known as retinitis pigmentosa. A sub-set of those patients will lose their sight. Until recently doctors have not had a means of caring for these patients in a manner that would restore their sight. But a retinal prosthesis is allowing some patients to experience a rudimentary form of vision restoration. The prosthesis is not for everyone and Dr. Iezzi discusses the factors he looks for when considering successful candidates for the device.
