In "Car Guys vs. Bean Counters," former General Motors exec Bob Lutz briefly recounts the circa-1970 story of how GM styling chief Bill Mitchell revealed one of his latest design concepts, the “Pegasus,” to the automaker’s engineers.

The odd-looking cherry-red Firebird howled as it raced around the company test track, he writes, trumpeting an exhaust note completely unlike that of any American V8. Mitchell pulled in to stop in front of the engineers but continued to blip the throttle, yelling out to them “That’s what a car should sound like!”

Funny, then, that the Internet turns up just two results when you search for somewhere to listen to its V12, both of them amateur-shot clips of the car idling as it comes off or goes onto its trailer.

Unless you happen to catch the broadcast-TV episode of "Jay Leno’s Garage" from some 10 years ago where the show’s titular host wrings the Pontiac out with then-GM-VP-Global-Design Ed Welburn riding shotgun, odds are you’ve never heard the legendary note churned out of this car’s exhaust.

Well, we’re here to fix that. Check out the full article on Driving: https://driving.ca/car-culture/vintag...
