Amitayus - The Buddha of Long Life, Merit and Wisdom.
Amitayus - The Buddha of Long Life, Merit and Wisdom. He is the sambhogakaya aspect of Amitabha Buddha - the Buddha of Limitless Light and Life; and is the principal Buddha for overcoming the power that death and ignorance have over us. With these removed, we can fulfill our true human potential - the achievement of ultimate happiness through realizing our primordially enlightened nature. The names Tsepame and Amitayus in Sairskrit both translate as infinite life and reflect his role as the Bodhisattva of Boundless Life, and who is worshiped to increase life span, improve health and well being and generally remove obstacles to one's life force. Tsepame is the reflex emanation or the Sambhogakaya aspect of Buddha Yodpame or Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, and who also resides in the same western paradise Dewachen.
The early references to Tsepame are contained in the Sutra on the Contemplation of Buddha Amitayus which narrates how Shakyamuni Buddha comforted Queen Vaidehi, the chief consort of King Bimbisara, who was imprisoned by his son Prince Ajatasatru. Queen Vaidehi was herself imprisoned by the Prince for feeding the King clandestinely and was greatly distraught and depressed over the sufferings that humans caused one another. In response to her impassioned prayers, the Buddha is said to have miraculously appeared along with his disciples Maudgalayana and Ananada, and taught her about Dewachen, the realm of Amitayus and of how she could seek rebirth in that pure land where she could continue her spiritual development free from the worries and strife of samsara. Buddha Sakyamuni has spoken about the power and the great benefit of Buddha Amitayus's mantra. According to the Sutra, it's said that the merits accumulated from offering Buddha with the most precious stones that fill the universe can be counted, but the merits of recitation the mantra of Amitayus is far too vast to be measured. Lord Buddha also given the example that reciting Amitayus mantra is liken a ninety nine millions Buddhas remain in Samadhi and chanted the mantra in one voice thus it's extremely powerful.
Amitayus is the Buddha of boundless life, merit and wisdom. By engaging in Amitayus practice we can develop these qualities, which are essential for our spiritual development, and eventually attain the deathless state of enlightenment. There are also several references to the practice of Tsepame rituals in many of the hagiographies and biographies of the great saints and scholars of Buddhism. In the particular case of Nagarjuna, it is said that his life was extended beyond the mere seven years that he was expected to live through the practice of a particular Tsepame sadhana. Nagarjuna initiated into this practice at the beginning of his eighth year by the great Mahasiddha Saraha at Nalanda and then went on to live, by some accounts, for over six hundred years. Accounts of Nagarjuna's life are interspersed with details of how he also utilized Tsepame rituals to help save or prolong the lives of many beings, including that of the King of the Nagas, who in gratitude bestowed on him the sacred Prajnaparamita texts.
