In this comprehensive comparison video, we dive deep into the mapping and surveying capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro and the new iPhone 15 Pro. We put both smartphones to the test, evaluating their camera and LiDAR sensors for various aspects of accuracy and performance.

First, we examine GNSS accuracy, and both phones deliver similar results, with horizontal accuracy at 15 feet and vertical accuracy at 11 feet, which translates to approximately 3 to 5 meters, consistent with single solution GNSS observation.

Then, we focus on the LiDAR range capabilities, where we investigate whether the iPhone 15 Pro's enhanced light sensor lives up to the hype. We conduct tests at 5 feet (about 1.5 meters), 15 feet (about 4.5 meters), and 25 feet (about 7.5 meters) from an object to see how well both phones' LiDAR sensors perform. It becomes evident that the iPhone 15 Pro captures a denser Point Cloud, indicating more light pulses emitted from its LiDAR sensor.

To assess the SLAM algorithm in Pix4D Catch, we perform a Misclosure Error Test. We walk around a house, expecting to return to our starting point with some drift and investigate whether the iPhone 15 Pro exhibits any advantages over the iPhone 14 Pro in terms of accuracy. Our results show that both phones exhibit similar performance, with no significant improvements in drift.

Next, we recreate a Feature Reconstruction test using Pix4Dmatic, scanning a playground structure to evaluate the cameras and LiDAR sensors' ability to capture detail. Results demonstrate that both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro have similar performance, but absolute accuracy still presents some challenges.

For a Linear Accuracy Test, we place LiDAR target points along a 100-foot line, collecting coordinates using a surveying Total Station. We assess how well the iPhone's LiDAR and camera sensors map this linear path and how much drift occurs. Our analysis reveals consistent errors in both phones, indicating challenges in maintaining accuracy when navigating linear paths.

The Relative Accuracy Test involves assessing the errors between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro and comparing them to the coordinates captured with the Total Station. While both phones exhibit absolute accuracy limitations, we find that the iPhone 15 Pro performs better in terms of relative accuracy.

In summary, this video provides a detailed examination of the mapping and surveying capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro, shedding light on their strengths and limitations in various scenarios.
